In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Snorlax acts as a “progress gate” that blocks key routes until you complete a short story chain. The solution isn’t to push it aside or use a move—it’s to obtain the Poké Flute, then use it on the sleeping Snorlax to trigger a battle.

What you need before you can move Snorlax

  • Access to Celadon City (you’ll typically reach it after passing through Lavender Town’s area and nearby routes).
  • Completion of the Team Rocket sequence that leads to a key item needed to progress the Lavender Town storyline.
  • Ability to enter Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town and clear the required encounter there.

Step 1: Get the Silph Scope in Celadon City

The core blocker in Lavender Town is that you can’t fully resolve the Pokémon Tower events without an item that reveals hidden ghosts. That item is the Silph Scope.

  1. Go to Celadon City.
  2. Find the Team Rocket Hideout (it’s tied to the city’s Rocket activity and is the dungeon you must clear here).
  3. Work through the hideout, defeating Rocket members and navigating its layout until you obtain the Silph Scope.

Step 2: Clear Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town

With the Silph Scope, return to Lavender Town and go into Pokémon Tower. Your goal is to reach the top and finish the story event that prevents further progress.

  1. Climb Pokémon Tower, battling trainers as you go.
  2. Use the Silph Scope effect to identify what was previously “unidentified” and proceed.
  3. Complete the required encounter at the top to resolve the tower’s main storyline.

Step 3: Get the Poké Flute from Mr. Fuji

After you finish the key event at the top of Pokémon Tower, you’ll be able to meet Mr. Fuji. He rewards you with the item you actually need for Snorlax: the Poké Flute.

  1. Follow the post-tower story moment that leads you to Mr. Fuji.
  2. Receive the Poké Flute.

Step 4: Wake Snorlax and battle it

Now you can remove the roadblock—literally.

  1. Go to the Snorlax location blocking the route (there are two sleeping Snorlax in Kanto; either can be addressed once you have the flute).
  2. Open your Key Items pocket and use the Poké Flute.
  3. Snorlax wakes up and a battle starts. Defeat it or (recommended) catch it.

How to catch Snorlax (recommended)

  • Save before using the Poké Flute so you can reset if it faints or you run out of Poké Balls.
  • Bring Great Balls/Ultra Balls and enough healing items for a long fight.
  • Inflict a status condition (Sleep/Paralysis are common choices) and lower its HP safely.

Troubleshooting: Why can’t I wake Snorlax yet?

  • You don’t have the Poké Flute: go back—this always comes from Mr. Fuji after resolving Pokémon Tower.
  • You’re stuck in Pokémon Tower: you likely missed the Silph Scope in Celadon’s Team Rocket Hideout.
  • You used the flute but Snorlax is gone: if you defeated or fled the battle, that Snorlax won’t remain. Check if the other Snorlax location is still available, or reload a save if you want to catch it.

Once Snorlax is defeated or caught, the route opens and you can continue toward the next major cities and story beats.
