In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the two sleeping Snorlax aren’t random obstacles—they’re progress gates. You can’t wake them with items like the Poké Doll; you must obtain the Poké Flute. The steps below walk you from “Snorlax is in the way” to clearing the road (and optionally catching it).
What you need before Snorlax will move
- Access to Celadon City (you’ll need to reach the mid-game cities via Rock Tunnel or the Underground Path routes).
- The Silph Scope (earned in Celadon after dealing with Team Rocket at the Game Corner).
- Ability to reach Lavender Town and enter Pokémon Tower.
Step 1: Get the Silph Scope in Celadon City
- Go to Celadon City and enter the Rocket Game Corner.
- Find the hidden switch behind the Rocket member guarding the poster to access the Rocket Hideout.
- Clear the hideout and defeat the Rocket Boss at the end to receive the Silph Scope.
Why this matters: the Silph Scope is required to identify the “ghost” blocking progress in Pokémon Tower. Without it, you can’t reach the person who gives the Poké Flute.
Step 2: Clear Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town
- Travel to Lavender Town and enter Pokémon Tower.
- Climb upward, battling trainers as you go (bring healing items and consider a Pokémon with Bite/Crunch or a strong normal attacker for general reliability).
- Use the Silph Scope automatically when you encounter the ghost encounter—this reveals what’s actually blocking you.
- Defeat the revealed Pokémon to continue.
- At the top floors, rescue the man being held by Team Rocket.
Step 3: Receive the Poké Flute
After you free him in Pokémon Tower, he will reward you with the Poké Flute. This is the only key item that wakes Snorlax in FireRed/LeafGreen.
Step 4: Wake Snorlax (two locations)
There are two sleeping Snorlax on the map. Each one is a one-time encounter. Walk up to the Snorlax and use the Poké Flute from your Key Items pocket.
- Route 12 (south/east side access near Lavender—commonly blocks the path toward the Fishing/Fuchsia direction).
- Route 16 (west side near Celadon—blocks the Cycling Road direction).
Once awakened, Snorlax will immediately initiate a battle. If you defeat or catch it, the road is cleared.
How to catch Snorlax (recommended)
- Save your game before using the Poké Flute.
- Bring Great Balls/Ultra Balls and a few status options (Sleep is best; Paralysis is a safe backup).
- Lower Snorlax’s HP carefully—its bulk is high, so avoid critical hits from your strongest moves.
- If it uses Rest, take advantage: it falls asleep and becomes easier to catch, but its HP will be restored. Decide whether to keep throwing balls during sleep or chip again after it wakes.
Common problems and fixes
- “I used the radio / I can’t find a flute station.” That mechanic is in later games. In FireRed/LeafGreen you must obtain the Poké Flute from Pokémon Tower.
- “The ghost won’t move in Pokémon Tower.” You’re missing the Silph Scope from the Rocket Hideout in Celadon.
- “I fainted Snorlax by accident.” It’s gone for that save file. If you want it, reset to your pre-battle save.
What you unlock after moving Snorlax
Clearing Snorlax opens important routes that connect major mid-game areas, letting you progress toward later Gyms and story objectives more efficiently (and giving you access to new trainers, items, and optional side paths).
