Live Photos are great for capturing a moment with a bit of motion and sound, but many apps and platforms work better with standard video files. The good news: you can convert a Live Photo into a video directly on your iPhone using built-in iOS features—no extra apps required.

Before you start: what you’ll get

  • Output: a regular video file created from the Live Photo’s motion segment.
  • Audio: if your Live Photo includes sound, it typically carries over into the exported video.
  • Length: Live Photos are short, so the resulting video will be brief.

Method 1: Save as video from the Photos app (fastest)

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Find and open the Live Photo you want to convert.
  3. Tap the Share button (square with an arrow).
  4. Scroll through the options and select Save as Video.
  5. Return to your library—your new video will appear as a separate item (usually near the original).

Tip: If you don’t see “Save as Video,” update iOS if possible and confirm you’re sharing an actual Live Photo (not a still image).

Method 2: Convert multiple Live Photos by creating an album workflow

If you have several Live Photos to convert, you can streamline the process by working from an album:

  1. Create an album in Photos and add the Live Photos you want to convert.
  2. Open a Live Photo in that album and use Share → Save as Video.
  3. Repeat for the rest (this keeps you from hunting through Recents).

This isn’t true batch conversion, but it reduces friction and helps you track what you’ve processed.

Method 3: Make a quick looping video for social sharing (Bounce/Loop)

If your goal is a short “GIF-like” clip, you can apply Live Photo effects first, then export:

  1. Open the Live Photo in Photos.
  2. Swipe up (or tap the Live Photo controls) to reveal Effects.
  3. Select Loop or Bounce to change how the motion plays.
  4. Use Share options to send it to apps that accept the animation/video form.

Note: Some apps treat these as animated images rather than standard videos. If you specifically need an MP4/MOV-like file, use Save as Video in Method 1.

Editing tips before you export

  • Pick a better key frame: Open the Live Photo, tap Edit, and adjust the key photo so the thumbnail and starting moment look right.
  • Trim if available: In Edit mode, you may be able to shorten the Live segment depending on iOS version—useful if there’s unwanted motion at the beginning/end.
  • Check orientation: If the resulting video rotates oddly in certain apps, open it in Photos and rotate/crop once, then save.

Troubleshooting: common issues

“Save as Video” doesn’t appear

  • Confirm the item is a Live Photo (look for the Live indicator).
  • Try opening it from All Photos instead of a shared/filtered view.
  • Update iOS and restart the Photos app.

The exported video has no sound

  • Some Live Photos were captured with audio off (or audio wasn’t recorded).
  • Check your iPhone’s Silent Mode doesn’t affect playback assumptions in an app (the file may still include audio).

The video quality looks worse after sharing

  • Many messaging apps compress videos automatically. Share via AirDrop, iCloud Link, or email as a file attachment if you need higher quality.

Best ways to share your new video

  • AirDrop: quickest, usually preserves quality.
  • Files app: after exporting, save/organize the video for uploading to services.
  • Social apps: upload the exported video directly to avoid Live Photo compatibility issues.

With these methods, you can turn any Live Photo into a standard video in under a minute—making it easier to edit, upload, and share anywhere.
